Why do people in society have names ?

Isn't this an outdated tradition that will surely disappear in the future as we get more technologically advanced ?

I'd HATE a world where we would be given "numbers". It'd take away the personal aspect of names, we couldn't have proper nicknames as such. I'd find it depressing to be honest

Can't see it happening any time soon!

Nah. Letters have more combinations than numbers and are quicker to say

No. Can't see it happening. Surely people would lose any sense of personal identity if they were just known by numbers.

Sounds like the mark of the beast mentioned in the Bible's revelations to me.

When that comes into place the government will try and umber everyone

No thanks. Way too cold, sterile and dystopian for my liking.

Names are cooler, although we should be allowed to choose our own.

It's much more difficult to instantly recognise a string of numbers than it is to recognise a word or a name. For that reason alone, even if a government somewhere tries to legislate otherwise, as long as we have our own identities we will always have our own names.

What's being technologically advanced got to do with it?

Why would it? It works fine.

No, what is this, 'We'? If you're going to transplant yourself into a dystopian fantasy at least pick Brave New World. It may be screwed up but of all the dystopian societies, it's the one that makes the most sense. And the kindest. The worst they can do is exile you to a nice island.

probably in a far distant future where society has evolved to a point where names with letters are pointless wastes of time will numbers replace letters but for now...letters are cool 8)

    1) numbers are inconveniently long to call out. Imagine at a doctor's surgery!
    2) number's are quite difficult to remember. More so than a name (I'm not sure why, though)
