There have been quite a few threads along the lines of this... As far as i'm aware the Engineering department is quite a competitive one as a whole, it's best to e-mail admissions tutor now and ask.

People i know on the foundation year basically have to get 70%+ in related modules (i.e. physics and maths) with a 50% average in the others - just to be able to get onto the course next year!! So going along them lines i'm persume they might not be too lenient!! But yeah, it's best to ask

I'm on Aero @ Lufbra (just finished first year)

Generally with the engineering department, if you are on the MEng and you miss the grades, they'll automatically downgrade you to the 3 year BEng (assuming you make BBB/ABC) - but check on results day!

It is still possible to upgrade to the MEng, as long as you average 55% in your second year and don't achieve any F's in the first or second year.

hey, im at lufbra too doing Aero. Wonder if i know you thomasp. Anyway, the Aero dept are a bit leinient. As long as you got an offer from lufbra and you get at least BBB you will be accepted for the MEng if you applied for it. im on the MEng at the mo and i know some people who got BBB and are on the MEng. Another requirement is that as long as you have got A's and high B's only in maths and phy you will get on the MEng. If the worst comes to the worst you will end up on the BEng. You cant go below BBB. i dont think they will accept anyone with less.

Yo, i've just finished 2nd year, and i got on to the Masters with BBB. Basically, i think they just need to fill their quota for MEng and BEng. If you get the grades for one you should be in basically (if you get an offer from them) and if the competition for the places isn't really sought after. As the two courses are the same for the first two years, you can change between the courses at the end of the 2nd year depending on personal preference (if you have a good enough reason for wanting to change) or if you messed up and have to move from the MEng to the BEng. This happens if you get lower than 55% after the second year, but i've been reliably informed that if you get anywhere near 55, you shouldn't do the MEng. Basically, 60%+ allows you to be comfortable on the MEng.

Hope that clears a few things up, if you've got any questions, feel free to PM/email me.

i don't think this is true. My housemate i think got BBC and got in on the BEng, but we're performing about the same, and he's moving up to the MEng.

lol, hmmm rite. kk

lol ok so in the end, at AS I got:

A- Maths
B- Computing
D-Physics (only messed up in 1 module, and 7 ums marks off a C)
U-Chemistry(was going 2 drop anyway)

Do you think I should still go ahead and apply for Aeronautical Engineering @ Loughborough in 2007?

Only if you think you can bring the Physics grade up to a B. They won't take you with less than a B in Maths and a B in Physics, and even then probably only onto the BEng. If you haven't got that in your predicted grades, then they won't even interview you (or at least not for Auto...)

If your other two module marks were pretty high for Physics (like in the 'B' region), then definitely go for it

You could always e-mail the admissions tutor and ask them. The main thing is that your maths is high - that's very good for aero, believe me
in AS i got :

D - Maths
D - Physics
C - Economics
D - Chemistry

and now im starting first year in MEng Mechanical Engineering
... At Loughborough btw!!!!!!!!

MechEng requirements are much different to Aero and Auto Eng requirements. Plus it's less to do with actually AS grades and more /predicted/ full A level grades. And the university also tends to prefer students from other countries because they can charge them more (or so I was lead to believe).

From purely looking at prospectus', then Mech Eng requires lower grades than the Aero/Auto department (im on Auto btw) and when clearing vacancies were listed, the aero/auto department didnt advertise any, whereas mech eng did.

I presume its just because hte department is smaller and more competitive, and everyone knows that planes and cars are sexier than anything else.

To get the money of your backs... let me tell u what i acutually got at A level:

A- Maths
A- Spanish (im actually german, so this counted too) therefore:
B- Physics (After 3rd or so resit) -->
D- Economics (my least favourite) :frown:

D- Chem AS (Drop) :s-smilie:

oh, but i also took my spanish baccalaureat at the same time and got :

7,02 !!!!!!!!!! :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: (thats about 70%)

and to let you with a good taste in your mouthies...

i dont like bridges either! BUT!!!

--> -->who do you think designs dildos and vibrators?
OF COURSE US! MECH ENGINEERS!! (The sexiest are here)

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahahhaaaaaa!!

Im gonna apply to Aero anyway, I will have to see wat happens. I probably have to rely on a backup uni.

If you put Lufbra down as your firm choice for Aero they are quite flexible (or they were when I applied)

For example, if you apply for the MEng (AAB) and only get the BEng grades (BBB/ABC), they'll take you on the BEng course, if there's space.

And, vice versa if you applied for the BEng and get AAB or higher, they'll let you go onto the MEng at the start.

And, I believe, if you totally screw up, they even offer you spare places on the other engineering degrees, depending on how badly you screwed up.

And finally, if you go onto the BEng aero course and get an average mark of 55% or more in your second year exams (1st year doesn't count to anything!), you get the option of going up into the MEng degree. Likewise, if you're on the MEng and get less than 55% in the second year, you may find yourself staying at Lufbra for less time than you initially thought.....
