Have pathologists done medicine first and then specialised in pathology?

I'm sure I spoke to a pathologist who I'm pretty certain didn't study medicine

Yeah I vote to never pay attention to what they say you need to do in the US. I have no idea how their education system ended up so crazily different from ours! Medicine isn't even a degree there, you have to do some random other degree before they'll let you even apply. The purpose of which I have never been able to divine! :P

Are you really set on doing Pathology? One thing I'd recommend is getting in touch with the hospital pathologists and asking if you can shadow them or something, if you've not already done so. One of my friends did it and said it was the best day ever because nobody ever visits them so their joy at seeing somebody with an interest who wants to be taught is without limits. In a good way! None of the medical students are ever placed in pathology, it's mostly lectures, so lots of their teaching expertise & enthusiasm goes un-tapped.
