Both highly competitive, I'd imagine, because of the reputation of the colleges; so you'd be more likely to be pooled, and if you got an offer, it might be higher than other people's.

Have a look in the TSR offers/current students thread, see if there's anyone you could PM.
This may not be helpful to you, but in terms of competition: applicant numbers tend to see-saw between Magdalen and Christ Church year upon year for the more popular subjects like Law and PPE because of all the people looking at the applicant : offer ratio grids in the back of the prospectus. One year there'll be a glut of Christ Church applicants in one subject, the next year in Magdalen.

For Law, the 2005 application cycle (the most recent) was a 'Magdalen year', which meant only 30 applicants were interviewed at Christ Church for 10 places (at odds with the usual pan-college 5:1 ratio for that subject - and many had been pooled from Magdalen), suggesting that the pendulum effect will lead to larger numbers applying there next year. Therefore Magdalen may be a better bet.

Sorry, that was incredibly poorly explained.

I tried to PM Elles as a Magd person but her inbox is full

Sorry, can't quite face trying to delete enough to clear it out - someone subbed me & it then lapsed, so i'm way over...

Don't know much about Law specifically I'm afraid. Other than a Denning connection (I think the well known legal one studied here & his son certainly was a Fellow until quite recently) & there's a designated Law library complete with random book they leave messages to each other in!
There'll be a lawer helper at the open days this upcoming week though - http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/admissions_undergraduate/open_day.shtml *edit - although clicking the booking links says they're fully booked, whoops.*
& there's some blurb here: http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/admissions_undergraduate/subjects_law.shtml

& the college is really good at pooling applicants they consider to be good enough to other colleges - so the applicants : offers ratios probably don't do justice to the number of students who apply & are successful at getting into Oxford somewhere!

Perhaps i could help with any more general Qs?

It's up to you really. Both are pretty similar in terms of rep and size, so go on open days and see which one you like better.

No. Offers will not be higher.

Yes, checking the offers thread, you're right. New and Wadham seem to be the ones handing out the high offers. Which confuses me - I assumed CC and Magdalen would be handing out high offers because they could, since they get such competitive applicants.

There's a massive first year building just over the bridge - so maybe 5 minutes from the main site? I thought it was fine, fairly hideous 60s building from the outside - but decent sized rooms & loads of communal showers/baths & kitchens. Plus the fun of ~80 first years living in the same building with long corridors (=corridor parties!), that's next to a river (BBQs & punting) & above an off-license (=easy access to alcohol for the BBQs & punting or emergency ice cream!)
Other first years live in houses on the High St or Longwall St, so opposite the main college site on either side.

Accomodation in other years is done in a ballot system that's then reversed for the year after. There's a range of rooms so you can choose what matters to you. In my second year it was showers & kitchens - some of the more newly refurbished buildings have ensuites & really well equipped kitchens & are either on the main site, or opposite walls on Longwall St again. In my 3rd year it was fabulous-ness, so i went for a beautiful room which I'll be very sad to leave! & there are quite a few 'sets' (living room & bedroom) about college.

College accomodation is guaranteed throughout your undergraduate years. & it's a flat rate system - though sadly less cheap than when i started, but rents in oxford in general have been on the up.

http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/looking_around/college_map.shtml Shows a map of the college & some photos of the areas with blurbs about who lives there if you click.

I cant say much but my brother read law at magdelen recently and won the manches prize (for an 85!) and also got the 4th best first in the university. So all in all it cant be that bad.

From his stories I hear that the tutors are very friendly, and i have met a few other lawyers there and they tend to be very down to earth.

He had decent accomodation all three years. He got a big room accross high street first year and mediocre ensuites in college the next two years.

Oh, and Christ Church student have a *reputation* around oxford for being a bunch of ponces.

Hope this helps
Hi, I've just finished my first year at Magdalen. and two of my best friends do law. they both love it really.

As for accomodation, if youre a first year yes you live away from college, but its literally a 2 minute walk over a bridge.

I've been to ChCh and (obviously i'm biased) but the place seemed really big and imposing, Magdalen is prettier and I've found the people at Magdalen to be less what you would imagine the stereotype oxford student to be.

the only other thing i can think of with consequence to law is that (and i dont know about at ChCh) they always seem to be having law social events and special dinners etc and they have their own law library.

hope that helps
