Well search and destroy was not really very effective because generally the US soldiers would go in, burn homes, interrogate civilians and create mayhem and then they would leave. Then the Viet Cong would just move back into the village most of the time rendering the operation pointless! This would also turn the Vietnamese people against the US as well (have you gone over the whole 'hearts and minds' thing?) which meant it was easier for the Viet Cong to convince the people to turn against the US. Also, the US troops were hostile and violent while conducting these search and destroy operations which the US public didn't like. My Lai is an amazing example of how the US public began to see their soldiers as brutal people rather than heroes. Plus, you have to remember that the whole reason behind search and destroy was to weaken and reduce the Viet Cong's defences and their ability to attack- which it didn't seem to do if you examine the Tet Offensive. Hope that helps about search and destroy
