Hi, I'm applying for mental health nursing for 2014 away from home. With bursary and loans would I be able to afford the accommodation without help from parents?

Theoretically, yes. You need to choose your accommodation carefully and consider travel costs to uni/placement. I know people living in the same accommodation who do it, and also people paying the same amount of rent who say there is no way they could do it. I think it depends a lot on your lifestyle and the way you're used to living at home.

I'd recommend looking into the price of a bus pass and making up a proper budget (how much money you've got coming in every month, with rent costs, travel expenses, food, laundry etc coming out).

I managed it. I had to take on part time work during my studies, originally in a pub then on the bank once I could get on. It was a struggle but it's doable.
