Advanced Extension Awards

Hey there all,

I'm new around here, and I had just had a question that was bugging me so I thought I'd take this opportunity to write my first post.

I start my A Levels in September this year and I plan to take the following subjects:

Economics
History
Government and Politics
Mathematics (AS)

All the subjects are Edexcel.

I also wanted to pursue as AEA in Economics, but this is a AQA award. Is it possible to do an AEA for a subject which you have studied at AS/A2 at another exam board?

The AEA is only offered by one exam board anyway, so most definitely yes.

:ditto: The AEA is designed to be suitable for students using any exam board at A-level. I do French with Edexcel, but I'm doing the AEA, which is offered by OCR, and it's not a problem at all.

I herd somewhere that the board doing the AEA award covers all the common things in each syllabus for the subject, so yeah you can take it.

I might actually be wrong on the comment that only one board offers the AEA, but no worries, I'm positive you can do an AEA with a different board from your regular exams.

Different exam boards do different AEA such as Edexcel does Maths that no one else does and AQA does Bio, Chem that no one else does afaik.

Just wondering but when do you take AEA's in your first or second year?

You can take them in either, but it makes much more sense to take them at the end of the second year after A2s, when you'll be better at the subject and have more chance of doing well.
This is going to sound really stupid, but what exactly is an Advanced Extension award?

It's an additional paper available to the top 10% students in the country - just another qualification to distinguish them from an applicant with just 'A' levels. It doesn't require any more memory work; just a good understanding of the subject and the ability to apply knowledge.

It's an extra 3 hour exam you can take on top of an A-level. It's aimed at the top 10% of students in the country for that subject and you can get either Distinction, Merit or Ungraded. And don't worry, it doesn't sound stupid; I'd never heard of them before TSR either
thanks guys, i don't think it will affect me though, not clever enough for that lol
