It's just not going to happen at all. Of course the American crews would win; US universities offer sports scholarships etc, whereas the Oxbridge rowers are complete amateurs who still have to complete a hell of a lot of academic work and train at the same time.

Alot of these rowers are given scholarships.
You do actually realise how many foreign students come here on scholarships don't you?
There are literally dozens of foundations set up

How do you mean? Well a friend of mine was on the same course as the Oxford cox last year (when he also coxed the blue boat). He was studying for the B.Phil in Philosophy at the time, which is (arguably) the most respected and rigorous postgraduate philosophy course in the world. He had serious worries that he would fail the course as a result of all the time he spent coxing/training with the crew. In the end he didn't and he's now doing a D.Phil, but Oxford and Cambridge do not give any academic breaks for sports commitments, even at Blues level.

True, but the US do things bigger and better in everything (quite literally including the people). They'd offer more money, that I'm sure of. All the top public schools in the country are now pestered by the US uni's with offers of huge scholarships, I certainly have first hand experience with that.

These two lecturers came from Harvard in Poetry to do a lecture. All the 'potential Oxbridge' graduates had to go and listen to their annoying voices. I believe they were doing a whistle stop tour of the Northern Wastelands schools.

Someone I know did actually go to a crap American Uni, on a football scholarship. I assure you, he wasnt that good at football, they are pretty desperate.

lets imagine for a sec there was going to be a boatrace between a combined oxford and cambridge crew vs a combined harvard/yale crew.

who do you think would win?

anyone think this will ever happen someday? or more likely there will be a
boatrace between the UK winner vs a US winner?

Wasn't Sunday a UK vs US boatrace?

That's just not true! Neither Harvard nor Yale offer any sort of merit based scholarship. They do offer financial aid, but that is entirely means tested*. I view visits by American admissions tutors favourably - it shows they appreciate British students and want them to apply. I also think bucketloads of pupils at public school could benefit from a US education. US unis are less focused on academics, and this suits students who are not exceptional academically but offer a lot on the extra-carricular side.

As to the Boat Race results: it depends. If it was undergrad only, the Yanks would kick ass, as they have recruitment programmes which allow people to be admitted purely for rowing (occasionally in spite of very mediocre academic performances). If it was uni wide, I suspect Oxbridge would win because the Boat Race is such a huge attraction many of the best Yanks come over here for post-grad. Prime example - Cambridge's stern three were all from Harvard this year.

*this is proper means testing, i.e. very thorough and takes account of damn near everything. A world away from the UK Govt which just bases it on income.

Yale and Harvard would crush oxbridge. Competition would not even be fair. Athletics at American Unis are taken way more seriously.

BTW, that is one of the reasons that American University does not appeal to me as much.

With respect I never mentioned that Harvard or Yale did offer scholarships.

Most people in this country dont really care about athletics apart from the olympics so that point is lost.

Damn right we would. Anyone who's been in Cambridge in the summer will vouch for that!
