Tends to be:

All year
10,000 words
Student's choice, but approved by a tutor

My brother's had to be at least 50 pages which equals to a certain amount of words, he did have all year to do it - only did it in last 5 weeks though!

You should check with the institution you intend to attend. Requirements vary a great deal. Doesn't it give more detail in the course catalogue?

Will vary greatly. Some people get theirs set for them, others have to their idea approved by a tutor. Length varies, but generally around 10,000 for undergraduate and (for most people I know who have done their dissertation) the summer between 2nd and 3rd year is for researching your topic, then the work goes on until around march/april/may of the third year

Agree with everything posted so far. At my uni, we get to choose how many credits we want to do on our dissertation, which gives us the word limit. The more weighting you have on the dissertation the more words it has to be.
