Really Bad Spots

I've got really bad acne all down the sides of my face and on my back. I've been on Oxytetracycline, an antibiotic, to help them clear up. Today, I went back to my doctor to tell her they werent working.

On hearing this, she said to me, 'what do you want to do?'. I obviously didn't know what to do, as I'm not the doctor :s:. I just said I didn't know , and she gave me oxytetracycline for three more months and some cream to use.

Should I go and see a different doctor? I'm not sure whether to trust this woman.

:ditto: nothing wrong with getting a second opinion

I was on Oxytetracycline for mine and also noticed they did nothing. There's a treatment called Roaccutane that can be used. It's a 6 week treatment which totally rids your spots but has some quite bad side effects. Do a google search for it and look it up!

No you wouldn't rather have the spots. I was on Roaccutance for about 16+ weeks and the only side affect i got was the dry lips. It did wonders. Psychotic symptoms, birth defects (unless your pregnant), suicide attempts etc are only in extreme cases. As i say, for me i just got the dried lips!

Best thing to do is to go to a dermatologist. Oxytetracycline is ****, it does ***** all. Next time you see your doctor ask him to refer you to a dermatologist.
try a chinese herbalist, i went to one and i got some lotion called "acne getaway" which has a lot of herbs in it..and that cleared up ALL of my acne in a week.

i still get the odd spot, but nothing like what i had before.

so give alternative medicine a try

I'm trying benzamycin gel. It contains benzoyl peroxide (a ketarolytic to dry out the skin) and erythromycin (an antibiotic). I just leave it on overnight.
I won't pretend that it gets rid of all acne in a week but I've been using it for a few weeks now and my skin is definetely clearing up. (P.S. It's prescription only)

my doctor suggested lemon juice as it has anti bacterial properties, well I tried it and it cleared my skin up but as well as that I used one of those aging creams that you exfoiliate with and are supposed to peel the top layer of the skin before you moisturise with the cream provided and it has helped ore thaqn the antibiotics. why not try it? see if it works, takes about 3-4 weeks
I have suffered from acne for years and it ruined all of my teenage years. I have used quite a few different types of antibiotics and creams, but none of them really worked. I have also tried 2 courses of roaccutane, which also wasn't that helpful. I have recently started using a product called Ketsugo, which has helped more than the antibiotics did for me -I've found that my skin isn't as greasy as it used to be. Not sure whether this is just a coincidence though or whether the ketsugo has actually helped. This stuff is quite expensive though, at around 10 or 11 pounds a bottle.

Google vitamin B5 treatment for acne, it really worked for me however i ran out of tablets and now their coming back big time :frown:

I suggested this before but no one cared.
I took Oxytetracycline for a few years, and then my doctor put me on a different antibiotic called Minocycline. Maybe you could ask for a different antibiotic as your body can develop a resistance to them after using them for a while.

Another thing I found that helped me a lot, was moisturiser. I know it sounds a bit daft, but I think I was getting more spots because my skin was dried out and cracked and so got infected more easily. Since using moisturiser twice a day my skin has got a lot better (and I'm not taking antibiotics at the moment either so it's definitely not those.) However, this cream that your doctor has given you might have the same effect, but anyway, hope this helps!

i took oxytetracycline, but then stopped because its quite a lot of effort and the pills are pretty big

Oxytetracyclin was the final thing I was on (and I had been on a lot of things, not all at once of course) before I was tranferred to a dermatologist and put on roaccutane. It's brilliant, I was on it for 8 months because my spots were quite bad, but now I'm cleared up completely and I haven't taken it for around 3 months and counting and they haven't come back.

Those severe side-effects they put on the leaflet are really only to protect themselves should anything happen to anyone and they blame the tablets, the company can just say they warned you. The only side effect I experienced, as well as most other people I spoke to who took the drug, was the dryness. Also, they say roaccutane can cause depression, but if anything, I was happier because I could see my face clearing up.
