Hi guys,

Having a spinal fusion 2moro of the lumbar spine (lowwer back). Has any1 else had this type of operation? Just looking for any tips, advice etc.

Thanks.

I had that as a part of another operation, I think. Is that where they remove ribs and use it as paste to fuse the spine?

Good luck! A friend had this, and apart from having to stay off school for quite a long time, said it's really not that bad.

I hope it all goes well for you!

Hey i had this opperation just under 3 years ago, what sort of stuff do you want to know? you can personal message is you want to ask lots of stuff.
Which hospital are you getting it done at? There's a fantastic orthopaedic one near home that I present hosp radio for...

Bear in mind that for the surgeon doing it, spinal fusion is a straightforward textbook operation. You'll be fine, so I shan't wish you good luck :p: Have a fab recovery though - if it's the one here you'll have incredibly fun physio sessions in the on-site leisure centre!

All i can really say is don't panic. Even though it is a major opperation it is routine. You wont be able to sleep very well the night beforebut just try not to think about it and remain on the positive side of stuff. Make sure you have plenty of support around you from friends and family, they will get you through the initial pain! The opperation will hurt. Mine took 9 hours and after that you will feel completly knackered. The first couple of days after the opperation you will feel extremly tired and you will just keep falling asleep without really thinking about it. When i had my operation i spent the 5-6 days after my operation on my back so make sure you have plenty to do, take books, games, (my old school block of gameboy was great for me and i kept beating my top score on tetris! so if you have a ds, psp, gameboy anything then take it) MP3 player and make sure people come and visit. If possible try and get a TV aswell, you will soon come to realise how boring daytime TV can be but its better than nothing. When i had mine the nurses went to the childrens ward and got me a TV and a playstation because the ward i was on didnt have its own little TV, it just had one in a seperate room, not much use if your flat on your back!

You will be taught how to get up and walk once out of bed, this took me 6 days before they showed me. Once you are able to get up and they allow you to walk , then do it as much as you can, it will make you feel better and can only aid your recovery.

Try and do anything that they show you if it will aid your recovery, you will want to get out of hospital as soon as possible, they told me that it usually takes 10-14days before you can be released, i wanted out so did as much walking and stuff as possible, and was released after 10 days.

Dont be afraid to use the nurse calling button thing they give you if there is a problem, they are there to help and can usually be quite friendly and only want the best for you.

It will be very painful and a bit stressful, but do try and stay positive. The benifits definatly out way the cost, so just think long term and you will be fine!

If you do want to know more then just ask.

I thought the most tormenting part was not being allowed to have my coke at midnight before the operation. I bribed the nurses to let me have a few spoonfulls. I love my coke.:p:

Graham does the adolescent wards... who are you - an ex-patient with a huge collection of funky mugs won during Sunday night bingos? Get excited - RNOH rocks! I'm at uni in London during the week and it's wonderful coming out here to do some of the weekend shows in a setting that's just like a countryside campus.

And I'm not telling who I am just yet.

I was in there for 3 weeks having surgery when I was about 15! The bingo kept me sane! I have a nice navy mug and many of those fluffy sticky things with googly eyes, although I think I may have bribed my way into the fluffy things, my bingo never really went anywhere! Is Stanmore near London? I'm going to Kings (hopefully!) and I've been telling myself I was going to go back to see all the people who looked after me and put up with my demanding unreasonable requests so maybe when I'm over I'll be able to do so! I actually had the nurses order me McDonalds and Chinese every night because the hospital food didn't please me and wheel the bed outside before I was allowed to walk so I could use my mobile, because I didn't like people listening to my payphone conversations. I'm just realising what these people had to put up with! :p:
