ok, i was once a sporting young chap playing hockey and athletics for the school, club and county...

a year at university, involving a fair amount of alcohol, kebabs, lack of sport etc... i've gained a stone or so i'd guess. whilst i'm still nowhere near being 'fat' or anything, i've decided to join the gym over the summer and lose some weight. what sort of exercise will do this? is a good cardiovascular/aerobic workout going to be more beneficial than lifting weights for example? any recommendations for workout routines/apparatus to use?

Yeah, loads of cardio will burn your fat right off, but remember every extra pound of muscle you put on, you burn 500 extra calories a day just by sitting around, so don't neglect the weights.

Get on the rowing machine for serious fat loss and like i've said in previous threads interval training all the way!

BS. There are far too many external factors involved in the human body to make a statement like this true. There's no way that people can work out how many extra calories are burnt with extra muscle; it's too hard! The number will be different for different sexes, people of different ages, people with medical conditions, people of varying diet, etc. If you can prove it, i'd love to hear the explanation.

However, I do agree with the fundamental of extra muscle = higher rate of calorie burning. This is because more muscle increases the metabolism.

I never said that one pound of muscle is different from 1 pound of muscle. What i said was that if you take a male and a female, and they both add 1 pound of muscle, the rate at which they both burn calories will not be one standard figure; it will vary. My point wasn't to say that men and women are different, although they are; it was to say that you can't assume that 1 pound of muscle burns an extra whatever amount of calories.

You don't understand my point; you seem to think that if you add on 1.000000000 pounds of lean muscle, you'll burn an extra 50.000000000000000 calories. All i'm saying is that there is a degree of give and take.

You're right in that more muscle means more calories burnt, but wrong in that you think there can be an exact figure to work out just how many calories are burnt.

Also the figure is closer to 10 calories per lb of muscle, not 50.

Hager; you should not judge something based on how much you like someone; it should be facts and your views that count. But i don't mind you agreeing with whoever you like; it's a free world.

Chief; Well, if google begs to differ, it must be right! I assume that whatever newspapers print is also true? No, didn't think so. just because something's widely said doesn't make it right. My point is dead simple, and quite frankly, isn't opinion; it's common sense and fact.

narb; that's my point; how can someone actually know the figure? that's the whole point; there isn't one figure; it varies for different people.

infact, why are you even arguing with me? its not like i actually said it was 50, i was actually correcting someone elses typo. Argue with them, and google is right seeing it actually gives a range of values not just 50
