Had to be said. You've pretty much covered it. Porn is not illegal on the whole (excuse the phrase). Child porn - illegal, under 18 porn - illegal, regular porn - fine.

Not very funny RogueTrader..
On a serius note, you cant possibly know how old the people in porn videos are (unless it is blatantly obvious), so obviously that under 18 rule is aimed more at the producers of porn?
It's illegal to view porn if you're under 18.

if the porn quite obviously has minors in it, you can be charged. but there are indeed more laws of producing than watching porn.

RogueTrader - Yup. Whoever is responsible for organising and shooting the video / pictures is liable for checking they are over 18. This also is put in place to make sure that everyone partacipating in porn is a concenting adult as it is unlikely anyone under 16 will look over 18. But like you said, yes, it is hard to recognise when these laws are being broken a lot of the time.
Nope, over 18 porn is fine, under 18, wrong. Your mate has no idea what he is talking about. Also you must be 18 to look at porn and 21 in some places in America.

It might be illegal in a few countries, but not in any that I can think of right now.
What i want to know is why, with the age of consent being 16, are 16-17 year olds not allowed to watch porn if they are allowed to have sex
one thing to be wary of is there's a campaign at the moment to try and get violent porn classified the same as child porn, because some sickos have used it to get off to before committing murders on women

not that I am a connosieur of porn or anything but a lot of the more extreme stuff does have things which are quite violent, girls being strangled till they lose consciousness and so on...that will go down with the kiddie fiddling in time

Well, take Iran for starters...

In Britain it is legal provided that the models/actors/whatever are above 18.
animal porn should be just as illegal as child porn, the animals don't have any say in it they are being exploited like children

It's illegal to view porn if you're under 18.

thats always made me laugh. its illegal to watch the stuff you can legally do for real when you hit 16
It's time the laws on porn were changed.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porn#Legal_status_of_pornography :

"United Kingdom: Hardcore material was illegal until 1999, when trade-barrier difficulties with regards to European Community membership ensured the relatively free movement of such goods for personal importation only. R18-rated videos are only available in licensed sex shops, but hardcore pornographic magazines are available in newsagents in some places. Purely textual pornography has not been prosecuted since the Inside Linda Lovelace trial of 1976. The Home Office plans to introduce legislation to ban violent pornography. Child pornography is totally illegal to posess and will result in a mandotory custodial (jail) sentance if caught. Internet porn is legal if the person accessing it is over 18 years of age and all models are over 18 years of age. This does not include beastialty and extreme violence (snuff), which are more likely to be prosecucted under different laws (e.g. animal welfare laws)."
