I think it is allowed, but come on... second hand gowns? :p: Fresh and new is the only way to go.

I thought by getting a distinction we got paid to get one and would still have money left over for "books"?

Depends what college you're at.

I know Prelim/Mod Scholars at our college only get £99.99 a year (£33.33 each term off battels). Think the gowns (new) are like £50 so that means they have another £50 to spend on "books". At other colleges they get more or less, and often if you get a first/distinction in your prelims it's not as much money as if they're FHS exams.

Jamie Edelmen (Keble) said that we have to pay for our gown if we get the distinction in our mods.

Not sure about that though, he seemed to focus more on the dinners that we go to and everything if we get a distinction in them.

Hm. At Mansfield we get £200 a year, and the honour of buying our own gown with it (so it actually comes out to £150). We do get a scholars' dinner once a year, though.

and.... that's pretty much it. Grr.

Jesus is free formal on Wednesday and Friday but I have no idea how much money... I also don't know why I care because there is zero chance of me achieving this - the standard number of Biology 1sts in first year is 5... and I am definitely not the 5th smartest person in my year!

Is a distinction the same as a First?

A distinction is awarded to the top performing at the end of your first two terms, so in essence, it is.

Ah, ok - thanks.

That's not entirely correct....you can get a distinction in prelims which is after your first THREE terms.

Surely that depends on the college.

The first public examination, Law Moderations, is taken after two terms.

Depends on your subject.

Some are examined after 2, some after 3. Others have moderations, which *do* have 1st classifications. Scholarships are awarded to those who get distinctions or firsts.

What I said is entirely correct. Prelims are always held at the end of trinity term and thus three terms have passed. Moderations in some subjects are held at the end of Hilary and thus two terms have passed. I was merely pointing out that your statement was not correct and that prelims enabled you to receive a distinction after 3terms had passed.

Either way it doesn't depend on your college but merely your subject.

In response to Rachel's question... a first is exactly the same as a distinction (except you can only get distinctions in your first public exam - prelim/mods - whereas 1st can be in any of your years).

Um... sorry, but that's not entirely right. Theology students have prelims in hilary term, for example.
£100 is quite stingy, especially if you're expected to buy a gown with it.
We (at Worcester) get £200 a year (which I thought was fairly standard across colleges) plus a £70 bonus as a mods/prelims prize for gown/books.

I thought they were mods? Okies, well I admit I'm wrong then!

I thought that was meant to be standard throughout the uni

actually, you can also get a distinction in second public examinations if you take supplementary subjects. so you can get a distinction in your second year. but that is just me being nitpicky
