The simple answer is no. It is absolutely NOT the drugs capital of the world, I think your sister may have gained this impression from watching the film Trainspotting which is not representative of Edinburgh. Yes, there are areas which have drug problems, same as absolutely any city in the world but the good impression you gained was right. Edinburgh is a prosperous, beautiful city which is very safe.

Hope this helps

hehe no edinburgh is certainly not the drug capital city of the world!! Have no idea where that could have come from, mm too much trainspotting. Id go far as to say the edinburgh uni has less drugs than a hell of a lotta places. We're well-behaved folk!

At the time Trainspotting was big Glasgow was the injecting capital of the world. I think thats probably far from true now anyway. But this is where the idea may have stemmed from.

At the time the film came out, Edinburgh was certainly the drugs capital of the UK, though it is not any more, and by no stretch of the imagination was it ever of the world.
I never would have guessed it. I suppose it's a big enough place to avoid that sort of thing if you want to though. Drugs in edinburgh never crossed my mind until "The Life of Grime" the other week.
Trainspotting is set in Leith, rather than Edinburgh.

It could be true for Leith really. Don't go to Leith.

Ever.

After being obsessed with anything Irvine Welsh Leith intrigues me.
They constantly find dead bodies in the docks as well.

The docks stink.

That's quite interesting to know. Does anyone know whether this drug 'culture' at Edinburgh cause any surges in violent crime? Are there many hooligans there?
There is no 'drug culture' in Edinburgh, this is getting silly. It's a very safe place to live & with far less problems than most other parts of the UK, do not] base your impressions of it on Trainspotting. Nuff said.

No. Ballymena, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.

Happens to be my home town. Described as the drugs capital of the U.K. anyway.
