Social Smoking

I'd like to know peoples opinions on social smoking.

Obviously I'm aware of the hell risks. I don't smoke at all (unsocially?) I'm not addicted, have never bought a packet during the day etc. The thing is, when I'm with my mates on a night out and I'm drinking (again, I won't smoke if I'm not drinking, so I'm more of a drink-smoker) I find it extremely difficult not to smoke, especially when all my friends are smoking (I smoke for the 'feeling', not to 'fit in', just thought i'd add that).

So anyway yeah, I'd like to stop. Is it still really bad for health in long term? I'm talking maybe ten cigs a weekend.

Responces appreciated.

10 cigs at the weekend....then 15.....then a few through the week *just when your stressed*......then maybe a couple tuesday lunchtime.....etc etc

I'd leave it if I were you.

I guess you could say I'm a 'social smoker'. I'm lucky in that I can smoke during nights out and stuff, but I've never had a craving for a fag during the day (except maybe times of pure stress :p:) and I've been 'socially smoking' for over a year nearly.

I would never want to become dependent on cigerettes, so I'm careful about not getting hooked.

I read recently that it is actually worse for you than you would expect. So what to be honest though, it's not going to stop me.

People smoke packs a day for their whole life. A few cigs every now and again isn't going to do any harm, particularly when we're this young as the lung tissue can still rebuild itself up until a certain age. It's worth it, in my opinion.

The only risk is it slipping into smoking full time, just don't let that happen. Plus 10 a week is a bit much, maybe cut down a little.

To be honest, I don't understand it.

I've never smoked in my life, so I don't really know much about it. But then friends who smoke all the time don't get it either. Hm.

'It's worth it??' what do you get out of it? A waste of money, smelly breath and clothing, serious health risks...? there is no excuse for social smoking since you're not even addicted... just being actively stupid!
Smoking is stupid.
Those that smoke are either weak-minded, or stupid.

You have no idea how many of my friends have started out as 'social smokers'....now they can't go more than a couple of hours without one! Slippery slope and all that...
It's difficult. I smoked weed rather than fags - always socially, never on my own. I gave it up (under force!) about three years ago now, but I have to say that there are times when I would give anything to share a joint with some of my mates.

It's when I get these feelings that I realise how much of a hold it had on me! I didn't realise it, but I was slowly falling in to an addiction. It scares me that even now, three years later, I can suddenly need it so much that it is hard to stop myself ringing up a mate and getting some.
Yep, I do it - it's not like it's a physical addiction or whatever, they're just nice, and I only ever do it with certain groups of friends, haven't for a few months now as I don't really see that crowd any more.

But yes, I know it's bad for me but to be honest I don't really care - pretty much everything enjoyable or fun is bad for you in some way.

And it doesn't have to be a 'slippery slope' thing if you don't let it. My first cigarette was probably about 3 years ago now, I've smoked socially on and off all that time and never been 'addicted', as such. I've never gone out and bought fags or actively wanted one, I just take them if they're there. It's not a big deal.
What do you get out of it? Its relaxing. It gives you a buzz. Its enjoyable and its social.

What is other peoples problem with it? Thats what i wonder. Surely you believe that people should be allowed to make their own mistakes in life? Its my money, its my lungs, its my breath, ill do whatever i like with it. Ill smoke outside so it doesn't get in your way, but dont bother trying to stop me.

1. It feels good.
2. It's cool.
3. It annoys people who have never smoked and think people only do it to 'fit in' or whatever other things their teacher told them in Year 7.

Well my reason for smoking on a night out would be that it slows down how much alcohol i drink. Every now and again, ill smoke 2-5 cigs when im out, not every weekend though. I dont think it can be doing me *that* much harm, and id rather smoke than keep having "just one more" vodka and get completely trolleyed...yeah i know i could just drink water or coke or whatever but i cant justify buying those at ludicrous prices, so i just bum a smoke of my friends. Plus, here in Ireland we have the smoking ban, so when you go out to the smoking balcony its a good way to meet people!

If you hang around idiots then smoking is cool.
You'll see the other side of things when...sorry...if you mature.

As for other people smoking, s'long as I don't have to breathe it in I don't give a ****, and I don't think any other non smokers do either. It's your life and if it's not affecting me I'm really not bothered if you mess it up.

Any fool can give up smoking, but it takes a real man to face cancer.

This is what I hate most about smokers in general. You're all so blind to the effects it's bringing upon your body. There's no such thing as reasonable smoking or 'safe' smoking, one cigarette will harm you, just like ten would.

Social smoking may or may not be the start of a slippery slope, it's impossible to tell and you're deluding yourself not to consider the possibility.

Smoking while young is no better than smoking when you're old, your lungs should be fully grown at 17-18 anyway so it won't make a blind bit of difference, apart from the number of years you'll spend smoking.

While you may feel it's not a physical addiction, it may have become one without you realising. Try not smoking for three days and see how addicted you are after that.

There is nothing "cool" about it. I cannot begin to describe the stupidity and irrationality of this argument. Do you really need to define yourself by inhaling harmful chemicals?

I apologise if I've insulted anyone in this post, but this is a subject which really annoys me. Everyone is, of course, welcome to wander off and kill themselves 20 sticks at a time, but at least try and see some sense in it all.

Everything in moderation, everything in moderation.

Everyone knows smoking is bad for you, get off your high horse. Just like eating a big fat take-away pizza is bad for your heart. If we never did anything that was bad for us we'd lead very boring lives.

If it doesn't bother you then why do you resort to petty insults? To re-assue your low self-esteem and assert your non-smoking superiority?
