I'm soon going to be starting a CIPFA training contract with a private accountancy firm. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on possible career progression into the public sector after I qualify. Is CIPFA highly regarded and/or in demand within the public sector? My work while I study for qualification will mainly be auditing NHS/Local Government - am I right in thinking this could open up working in a finance management role in these kind of bodies? I'm also very interested in entering the civil service one day; would CIPFA and auditing experience stand me in good stead for this or do they prefer those who have trained within the public sector/have a different qualification?
If anyone can help me with these questions I'd be very grateful! Thank you.

CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) the name says it all. Civil Service offer CIPFA as an option for the finance graduate schemes, local government offer this as a compulsory option for their finance graduate scheme even Grant Thornton offer it for their public sector audit scheme. So you'll be in a good place in the public sector even against ACCA, CIMA applicants.
