Please helpp urgent!! We had to make a double salt involving ammonia, sulfuric acid and iron fillings. How does the procedure make sure that the sulfuric acid is in excess?

From stoichiometry. Not a problem to calculate how much acid needed for iron fillings and ammonia (assuming you know mass and/or number of moles of both) to react with the acid - calculate, add these two numbers, multiply by 1.5 or whatever - and you can be sure you have an excess.

thank you ... but it says procedure...? so isnt it something like add iron filings in small portion and stir, only add in another batch after the previous iron dissolved...?

That would work too. Your question was slightly ambiguous to me.

Note: while it is relatively easy to see if you have added excess sulfuric acid to iron fillings, you won't be able to easily see if you have added enough acid to ammonia. That means you need to either mix the rectants in a particular order, or you need to check final pH of the mixture to be sure.
