Theres not a district, but I have a feeling I saw somewhere on the market which sells the more unusual Chinese ingreedients.
Theres a fairly big selection of chinesse stuff in the UFO (union shop) but I dont know what exactly, all the labels are foreign.

erm, theres a Japanesse resteraunt on Price of Wales road, but I guess that's out of your price range.

Non-chain heathfood shops seem to stock a lot of the less-usual things, but supermarkets have a fairly good range of 'ethnic' food too. Doubt you'll find much Japaneese things in them though.

There is a shop in the city by tesco called chinaworld which sells a lot of chinese food. A lot of chinese students go there to get their food.

There is also a shop called Kin Yip on Ber street (city center) which sells everything.
