I've always done mine as I go along, so looking in books/articles for info, then using it at referencing (harvard). I was talking to a friend the other day and he was saying he just types out the essay pretty fast, using info he's read in the research, then afterwards he goes back through and puts his references in. I'm tempted to try this as it sounds a lot faster.

I'm just trying to find ways to speed up my essay writing and make it easier at the moment. I'm in my third year and I still don't know how to effectively write an essay They take me so long and I find them so hard.

So how do you do your referencing? Is there an effective way that I'm missing?

Thanks

I put all sources in the bibliography before I even start writing - usually that makes for a pretty impressing list, as I use everything I can find for the topic and that seems helpful. As I am writing the essay, every time I reference a source I change the colour of that source in the bibliography from black to green. When I'm done with the essay, I see which sources I have used and which not - not unused I delete, done.

Well, that's the basic concept, usually it's a bit more complicated. Sometimes I write something which I have no source for yet, so I colour a couple of words in orange to tell myself that I need to find a source for this part. Sometimes I put a source in the bibliography which I know will be helpful, but have not yet found the access to (not in the library/cannot be found online etc.), in this case I mark it read. And so on ...

Thanks for the reply. That sounds like a really good way of doing things. I'd imagine that would take me even longer than how I usually do it though! But I like the idea of listing them and changing the colour as I use them. I may have to incorporate that somehow.

I footnote as I go along with just a note to tell me what book/site etc. I got it from then actually do proper referencing at the end and my bibliography at the end. I wouldn't reference as I go along if I felt it slowed me down at all, but I think it can be risky to just do it all at the end due to missing things you've paraphrased or other potential plagiarism slip ups.
