so i've been planning my gap year and i've found a programme in india that allows me to go there and help teach orphans but i'm not sure if my parents would let me go and i was wondering if anyone could provide me with some suggestions on how to go about asking

Just explain your parents the aim of your trip. Name all pros and cons. Explain that this is an adult decission. Don't shout or cry. Be cool and patient. Prove them that you can make serious, mature decisions.
I think they should be proud of you, such a noble mission.

Speak to them in the presence of another adult (teacher or something) who'd praise you, and mention you maturity. That way, they're less likely to be hostile.
