Hi, I've come on to ask a daft question really.

Do you think if my friend wore a bandanna to an open day it would count against her? She has said she might do, and I'm not sure if it was a joke.

When I say a bandanna, she wears them in the old school style.

No, it won't.

Open days don't have a strict dress code, and are more about the students looking around and getting a feel for the place. It's very unlikely that staff at open days would remember specific students enough to discriminate against them based on what they are wearing.

Why do you think it would matter?

I guess I think at some places it might give the wrong impression?

Universities are not schools. They are pretty used to students trying to make themselves look 'cool' and 'edgy' and are quite rightly unconcerned with such posturing. If it's an interview, dress appropriately for that. If it isn't, no one will care a tuppeny damn.

Open days are not interviews or even formal visit days, and many students attend them without talking directly to any staff, just to get an idea of what the campus is like, or see the accomadation, as well as maybe go to a talk about the course in a lecture theatre with 50-100 other people.

They are very informal days, and it is very unlikely anyone will remember you by name to then use your clothes to have an opinion on giving you a place or not.

The dress code is casual anyway.

Tbh, I would wait until you've actually been to an open day before you start making judgements about what people should wear to them.

I don't mind what she wears, I just wondered if some admissions people might remember people who dressed unusually.

Presumably that's why she's doing it. She won't be the first.

She wears bandannas quite a lot anyway. Maybe there is an idea in her head that if they look funny at her its not the place for her.

I think she may have the wrong idea about universities.

Fair enough. I'm only suggesting that, I guess maybe I do, about some places.

Having worked on open days, I can tell you that
a) we don't care what you're wearing
b) we see too many faces to remember what you look like
c) we don't attempt to connect faces to names and applications

If it's an interview, she should dress appropriately, but otherwise she can wear what she likes.
