Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice.

I'm a second year mental health nursing student in Glasgow but I would like to study an adult conversion course. I had a devastating experience on placement and I'm unsure I could work in mental health as a career.

has anyone got any experience of these courses ?
how long are they typically?
with regard to placement hours, how many will I do?
do I need to have spent time working in mental health prior to studying adult nursing?
Will I pay fees? Will there be a bursary/loan available?

thanks so much in advance

Nick

If you're a second year it may make more sense to speak with your uni and see if you can go back to the start of the second year doing adult branch if you really cannot see yourself working in mental health.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the experience? Could it just be isolated to that area of mental health nursing and could you work in a different area? We all have awful experience in placement so I understand, but I just make a note to steer clear of that area of work

Hi ive completed a conversion course in Scotland although not to adults but they are all pretty much the same.
Typically they can be anything from 15-24 months depending on what module you can RPL. Ive done 15 moths as I was allowed to RPL a community/specialist placement and a research module and I opted to put my management placement in to a theory block that was short.
Depends as its all individualised and its not like the first time where you have a set amount of hours to complete. Althogether I will have done 12 weeks of 30 hours and 21 weeks of 37.5 hours.
I went straight from qualifying in Sept to starting 2 weeks later.
Its funded by saas and you get exactly the same bursary as before.
If you have any more question feel free to pm me, I qualified in mental health before converting.
