I do a joint History and Social Anthropology degree at Queen's and after getting a disappointing first mark in my history essay (58%) my tutor asked if I had considered changing to single honours history which I thought was unusual given my result. I know that marks in anthropology tend to be higher and so I was wondering what is best- having a mediocre classification in history or a better classification in a joint honours degree? Thanks

First of all 58% is not bad at all for a first ever uni essay. You may want to discuss with your tutor how you can push your next one up to a 2:1 though but plenty of people are able to do that. As far as which is better then yes a 2:1+ degree would look better- there is no advantage in having a single honours History degree on its own, work experience is important as well but only switch if your happy to give up the social anthropology.
