I've now heard back from all my universities and thankfully I have 5 offers to study History. My top two choices are Loughborough and Sheffield and I've received AAB offers for both. I'm now at the stage where I'm thinking about which one would be better, I know I have a lot of time to consider it but I'd still welcome any advice at this stage. Thanks in advance

Anything particular about the two courses that you particularly like or dislike?

What sort of location are you looking for? Sheffield and Loughborough are VERY different.

I am not particularly fussy about the location, I've been round Sheffield and I like the idea of being in a massive city but the set up in Loughborough obviously has advantages too so that doesn't matter much to me. Should I take in to account the reputation of the two places and would I be right in thinking that Sheffield has the better one with it being RG and all that?

Forget the 'Russell Group' mantra, but apart from certain courses (e.g. sports science etc) Loughborough would generally be regarded as 'less good' than Sheffield.

But what about the courses? Look at the modules. Are some of them compulsory? If so, do you like the look of them? What about options - ditto. Does one uni seem to specialise in a particular era or geographical location? I just flicked the Loughborough History page to discover that it covers 1750 onwards and specialises in the 20th century. If you're into Medieval and Earky Modern, that wouldn't be much use to you!

Thanks a lot, helpful post. I have done quite a bit of research in to the modules of each course and I like the look of Loughborough's more at the moment. I'm just slightly worried about the possibility of rejecting an offer from what would be considered a 'better' Uni to go to a 'less good' one if you know what I mean?

I couldn't see much detail about the Loughborough modules - what did you find?

I know what you mean. But isn't a thoroughly stimulating three years culminating in a good degree better than the same time spent struggling with subjects you don't enjoy and coming out with a mediocre mark?

Sheffield. Better status= better employabilty. Loughy is good, but you'd be crazy to pick it over Sheffield...

If you enjoy it - I'm sure you'll have a blast. Have to ask yourself if they're any good at History, though.

Mainly, they teach people to build robots, manufacture concrete or become PE teachers.
