Hi all, in 2 weeks I need to submit my proposal for my dissertation, and I'm still stuck! I'm wondering if anyone could answer this question- the reply I've got from my tutors is so vague and differs a lot. Basically, are we allowed to analyse books that we have analysed in past essays at uni? What about topics that we've studied? Tutors say we can't repeat ourselves, but to be honest that can mean anything! Any help?

What university are you at? We had to give our proposal in before summer! Yours feels crazy late to me ha. Saying that, I still haven't done any of mine, so I suppose that's ok...
We have been told that we are allowed to use texts and materials previously used, although obviously only if they are pointedly relevant and not just to be lazy. I believe the same goes for topics, although I can't imagine wanting to use anything again too directly.
Don't take my word for it though - just email your mentor/department head and ask! It's very likely something a lot of others want confirmation on too so I doubt you'll be the only one asking them.
