Other than the regular student finance system, are there any ways a medical student can gain funding? Am I right that NHS bursaries don't apply to medical students until the fifth year? Do some universities have schemes set up to help medical students/students that come in with high-grade A levels?

As opposed to those medical students who get low A level grades? :p:

You might be entitled to fee waivers/bursaries from your university but medical students don't generally get any "extra" funding outside of the regular student finance/NHS bursary arrangements.

Not specific for medics, but your uni may offer a means-tested bursary.

What sort of NHS bursary arrangements are possible for medics? I swear I read that medics don't get any help from the NHS until the fifth year?

That's true for undergrad - but graduate courses have assistance from year 2 onwards.

You could research the cadetships ans bursaries offered by te armed forces...
