What is the best way to dump a person without making them feel as hurt or as rejected ... (without) using the (let's take a break) theory...

You can't really, they will be upset and feel gutted any way you do it. Talk to them face to face though and give them a decent reason why you want to end it

Say you just don't feel that way about them, you're so sorry and only want the best for them - which is precisely why it cant be: it wouldn't be fair for them not to know, and cruel for you to pretend it wasn't so.
