Is Saving £500,000 Worth The Contributing To The Death Of One Student?

http://warwick.tab.co.uk/2013/11/25/light-switch-off-contributed-to-death-of-student/

So the County Council official who appears to have approved the act defended the action: "If I have to save £500,000 then whatever I do will always have an impact on safety in some way.”

I'm wondering how the county council decided that £500,000 was worth somebody's son, did they give the parents £250,000 and kept the rest for building moats or something? If so, it sounds like a good deal.

I'm not sure it can really be blamed on the lights being off. There are many unlit roads, and if you choose to walk down one at night whilst drunk you are taking a big risk. It's sad, but people have to take some responsibility for their own safety.
Students are dying all the time, this is no special case so I don't agree with it.

Street lights aren't even required, not all the time. They certainly don't stop crime, and a full moon can be like daylight.

Consider the reduction in the councils carbon footprint.

He died because he was drunk and wasn't looking where he was going. Chances are that having the lights on wouldn't have affected that.
