What to do with my toe....

Basically... I was playing football and i went for a football with one of my friends and he stood on my foot - it hurt obviously, studs on feet etc etc, and i thought no more of it... It hurt but i assumed it would go...

Anyway i got home after playing (this is yesterday lunchtime!) and the toe nail has actually ripped off. :frown: The toe looks as though its broken - its badly bruised and is sore to walk on, so i have a ridiculous limp, but the worst part is the lack of nail... It bled pretty severely when it happened - the white sock was nicely stained! but now it just keeps oozing...

I worked tonight and pretty much had to peel my sock off my toe due to the oozingness.... What i want to know is, should i have a plaster on it, the reason i ask is, will a tight plaster to stop the oozing, affect the likeliness of having an ingrown toe nail?

If it will, what is the best way to treat the lack of nai and large amount of sticky liquidl....

Uh go to docs if it is broken to get it splinted and sanitized.... gross gross gross....
Do not not not not not put a tight plaster on it, that'll just cut off the blood flow and make it weaker than it already is! Go to the doctor's, ripping a nail off is very serious (because of the blood loss and so on, and hence also risk of infection). If it doesn't hurt too much, wash it - but don't touch it! Dip it in some warm water, then maybe wrap it in cotton wool or something, and go to the doctor's, but don't walk on it because walking will just break whatever scabs are trying to form.

Nasty stuff.

A doctor will do no more for a broken toe than you can do yourself!Thats not the bit thats annoying me.

Go see your GP as soon as you can. He can give you some disinfectant tablets to keep your foot clean with and stop any infection occuring. Bathing it in water should help, but don't put off getting it seen to.

You might have a broken metatarsol! lol!

Following Rooney and the World Cup a bit too closely were we!?

Yeh, as everyone else has said, go to Hell that is the doctors and get it checked out, on second thoughts, you might like to go to A&E as you have less people with highly contagious colds and flus in the waiting room just waiting to pass it onto you! I hate going to the doctors, you always end up more ill when you come out than when you went in!!!

lol! I heard that disease is caused by evil spirits and old people are more likely to be ill because they are evil? Lol!

sorry to go off-topic, but if every-one with small problems that can easily be sorted by going to the GPs went to A&E, there would be huge problems. as it stands, too many people clog up A&E with minor problems that can wait or be seen to by the GP.
See a bloody chiropodist!

The doctors will just send you to A&E if they think there is any chance of it being broken. And A&E/minor injurys will tell you to soak your feet in salt water and rest it keeping it well elevated.

I had a suspect broken toe a few summers ago, me and a chair had a fight. Thats what basically happened with me, and they didnt bother x-raying it since there isnt much they can do for broken toes.

But how do you know this problem can be sorted by a GP?!! It might need to be xrayed etc? And anyway- people cant always get a doctors appt- which is why some go to A&E instead!!

Go to A&E, thats what they're there for.

No, as i said, i was wondering if i should cover it up!

Latest update, i managed to peel myself off the bed sheet this morning (it is a blue/brown/yellow colour today and is oozing nicely still!) and painfully drive myself to work - by which time my foot was squelching nicely (a slight exageration...), i went to the on site medical centre here at work and had someone take a look at it... You know its good when the doctor/nurse looks at it and goes "eurrgh"...

They swabbed at and cleaned it up a little bit - which stung to buggery - i have been leaving the foot out when bathing and showering so havent had the pain! They then splinted it to the next toe - it is the one next to the big toe, so they splinted it to the left... Incidentally i had to ask them to do this - they suggested A&E for a broken toe, but having done that for a broken toe in the past and waited 5 hours for a little splint and plaster - i thought i would do it or they could do it.

They used one of those protective gauze things on it - it shouldn't stick to much and I have to change it twice daily until the oozing stops, or whenever I can feel it is wet!

They recommended I didn’t put anything tight on - this could affect the growth direction of the nail etc when it regrows - and they fitted the gauze loosely for this reason - it basically just provides a layer so I don’t ruin all my socks!

The pain is pretty excruciating to be honest, I am on Ibuprofen to numb some of it, but its still sore - whenever I walk, the combination of rubbing on raw flesh and the broken bone is really painful, whilst sitting it is just a dull ache. That toe plays quite a key role on walking! I was told to keep it up as much as I could…

For those who thought it was a metatarsal, it isnt, it is the wrong bone - it is actually in the toe!

As for football, none until the bone has healed and the nail regrown to at least half the original length - approximately 3 weeks to a month… the same applied to cricket….

It really hurts.:frown:

ive ripped my toe nail of many times playing football and ive just left it, kept it clean obviously and wrapped it up and it heals and grows again. but i never laid off the foot so kept ripping off like every week, advise you to rest it,

u say your toe looks broken and hard to walk on. give it a few days and see if pain dies etc. if it doesnt go see your doc
Poor baby!

 yep.

I am pretty sure it is broken, you dont really need a doctor for things like fingers and toes, you can feel whether they are broken or not... I have done many a toe in as well as fingers, the sure fire signs are when they bruise to buggery and swell up to about twice the size. Always painful....

ooze is a great word, don't you think?

yeah, get your ass down the doctors mate.

:p:
Pour a sink full of warm water and dissolve a couple of teaspoonfuls of salt in it, then soak your foot. It helped me when I had a messed up nail, althought it wasn't as bad as yours sounds.

Think the doctor cleaned it up with a swab and some saline solution, i believe that is salt water.... Wonder how many times the doc has heard someone say "nothing like rubbing salt into a wound"

Ooze is a fantastic word.... Although i prefer moist myself.
