Students - honest opinions on MMU as a whole?

Hi everyone, I'm currently sorting out my University application for September 2014. I've been to Manchester a few times (I went last year at New Year, best night out in the gay village!) I had my heart set on going to Manchester but unfortunately I didn't get enough UCAS points to get in, I do however have enough to get in to MMU. Now, I've been talking to my brother and a few of my friends and some of them have told me that universities such as the metropolitan ones are no good and I shouldn't apply for them - is this just an old stigma as they weren't considered as good when they first came around? Would I get a poorer standard of education than if I applied to say Portsmouth? I figured it would be better to get the honest opinion of students that go/have been to MMU, any help you can give me really I would appreciate it. I will be going to the next open day and if I like it this will be my first choice for sure!
