New mattress?

This may seem like a weird question but my mum was saying earlier today that she wants to buy a new mattress for me to take to my uni halls in september. Shes worried that the ones already there wont be very comfortable and she thinks it'll be useful not only for the first year but for the rest of my course, so when I move out of the halls and rent a house or something, I can take it with me.

I'm not really sure, what do you think? Has anyone actually done this? I'm wondering if its worth buying a new one - it'll also be a lot of hassle to move around! Should I just tell her not to bother or do a lot of people do this?

Never heard of anyone doing this! My one provided in halls was fine, as was the one provided in my house this year. I wouldn't bother personally!

your mum sounds as crazy as mine!
don't let her burden you with a mattress, you could ask her to buy you a mattress topper instead

Haha :p: I think shes being a bit over-helpful, bless her. I might suggest the mattress topper to her, good idea

The beds are usually quite small, so it would only be useful in future if you had a similarly small bed! And how would you transport it with all your other stuff?

Get her to buy a nice set of bed linen and a mattress cover or something. That would be more useful.
I would by my own mattress, maybe i'm mad like your mum. I would just be paranoid that someone else slept on that mattress (unless its new of course).

Tbh it would be a real hassle getting the halls people to remove the mattress that's already there - not to mention the hassle for you getting it up to and into your room ...

Like a previous poster said, get your mum to get you a good mattress topper and protective cover for this year, and if she's still feeling generous when you move out of halls then ask her for a new mattress then
You might end up in a double bed when you move into your house in the 2nd year, and then a single mattress would be bugger all use.

It's no different to sleeping on a mattress in a hotel - that will have been used by far more people!

I will probably just get a mattress topper, I think buying a whole new mattress is a bit extreme, plus where are you going to keep the other one??
and if you get a propper matress topper, like the thick foam-type one s, they can double up as a second matress if you have someone over!

The OPs suggestion sounds crazy, but on the basis of my experience, I would say it is quite a good idea. Virtually everyone I knew in halls had a rubbish mattress that they found it difficult to sleep on. Besides that, I personally hate sleeping on a mattress that other people have slept on!

My mattress was particularly bad and I suffered from insominia which caused a few problems with getting some assessments in on time (although I got away with it as the doctor gave me extenuating circumstances). After experimenting with a camping matt and extra covers over the mattress to stop the springs digging into me, I ended up getting an airbed. I guess I found that comfortable because I still sleep on an airbed now, and much prefer them to mattresses. But then again, I am just weird! :p:

One point about mattresses is that you may not actually be allowed it because they have to comply with certain fire regulations. I think it sounds like a well-meaning but slightly crazy idea to me.

At the start of this year I had an awful mattress, the springs were totally wrecked and it creaked and twanged even when you just sat on it, let alone anything more active. I reported it to maintenance because it was keeping me awake and hurting my bad shoulder, and they replaced it fairly quickly. Not sure all universities have quite such compliant maintenance/housekeeping staff though :p:

I think the mattress you have in a hall will be ok and if it isn't your Mum making a fuss will probably be enough to get it replaced. They wont take a mattress out and store it just because you dont fancy sleeping on a used one (no different to a hotel as someone else pointed out) and you wont have space to store it in the room. When you go into a house you'll have the problem that the landlord probably wont let you remove anything so you'll be stuck with yours and his in the place.
Have to say if you are squeamish enough to worry then you won't like living in a rented student property next year they are usually far skankier than any uni accommodation!

I'm not bothered about sleeping on a used mattress, I think my mum was just worried about the comfort aspect. I'll just see how it goes and tell her not to worry about buying one. The one in the halls will probs be ok anyway.
Thanks for the advice everyone!
All of my mattresses were bad, but I used 1 or 2 mattress pads and it made it really comfortable actually! They're cheap, just put it under the fitted sheet and you'll be fine.
