Hello!

I've answered this question, but I'm not sure I'm going about it the correct way:

Name:  img012.jpg
Views: 654
Size:  508.3 KB

It's the second bullet point I am unsure about (identifying element x). You can see my workings out in the second paragraph.

Here is the ionisation energy table for element x:

Size:  369.7 KB

If anyone could clarify what element it is and why, it would be greatly appreciated.

if element x is in the 3rd period, and the jump in successive ionization energies is on the after the THIRD ! what does that tell you? therefore what element must X be !


my answer
my answer would be
i would simply say that after the 3rd successive ionisation energy there is a large jump in energy required to remove an electron, this tells us that there are 3 electrons in the valance shell so element x is in group 3, reading off on the periodic table shows that period 3, group 3 element is Aluminium
