Formal word for 'troubled background'??

I'm writing a cover letter for a work placement with children with ADHD/ behavioral problems etc and I want to express my interest in working with children/ teens form troubled backgrounds....Is it really acceptable to use that term or is there a more formal/ appropriate term?

I really can't think of one!!

It's no wonder young people from troubled backgrounds behave as they do and show so much apathy for life, it's because of societal attitudes such as this.
