to cause pain?!
I dont actually know, it's just like a layer of skin that gets broken isnt it...no idea why we females have it! Oh god yeah, the first time hurt me as well because of that, it seems really pointless doesnt it!?
For men, its the same principle behind bursting bubble wrap

lol bubblewrap...

It can't be good to know that on your first time (when I imagine your nervous enough already!) your putting your partner through extreme pain...

Meh, I don't know the answer to the question. If you want a real answer, it'll probably make more sense to ask on a medical/clever forum  (/area of this forum)

so, this is a bit of a bizarre post, but last night was my first time.

and to put it blunty, it hurt so much that i wanted to cry! it got me thinking today, what actually is the point of the hymen?

to put people off sex?!

Aw, think your first sex as an achievement - it really is.
Maybe the hymen is like the appendix - totally useless!

Edit: Check this out for an answer - http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1825.html

Maybe it's some sort of protective, hygeinic natural thing  Nothing comes or goes through there when you're small so what's the point in having a hole til you need to use it?

After checking a few sites, all I could find is a paragraph on Wikipedia, which state that it's a relic from fetal development in the womb, since to begin with there is no opening at all; it has to be formed during growth. The hymen is the remnants of that.
It protects your vagina when you're a fetus (it covers your vagina completely during that time), and it's suppose to erode by the time you're born, but it usually doesn't erode completely.

Oh, and there was another site that said the pain isn't always caused by "popping the cherry". That's probably not any comfort to people who have to endure it :P

Hmm... Intriguing...

To go slightly off the topic - Must be hellish if you lose your virginity on your wedding night...
What's hellish is on your wedding night, NOT bleeding and being in pain.

In some cultures, if there's no blood on the sheets its assumed to mean the girl in not a virgin and she gets killed/stoned.

You can lose your hymen riding a bike. It's for protection from infection, from childhood to adolesence

I think all the girls I had sex with lost their hymen...one was a virgin, one said she a virgin (doubtful) and the other wasn't a virgin at all. Yeah, I get around

It's stupid anyway cause it breaks anyway before some girls even get to sex from various things. My workmate gave us this information over lunch at the stables I work at the other day as we all ride horses :laugh: Such an interesting topic of conversation!!

Sadistic pleasure?
or, if its masturbation, sexual self harm?

(sorry, that was below the belt, no pun intended!!)
I rode horses though and mine didnt break that way!
