Without negative reputation, positive reputation means nothing. All it tells you is that some people agree with a post, when it could be the case that the vast majority of people disagree.

Similarly, how many gems you have is almost entirely dependent on how many posts you have made, rather than how many people agree with you i.e. what your reputation is like.

There have been plenty of idiotic or controversial posts by users who end up appearing to be strongly favoured by the community, when behind the scenes most people disagree with them.

It ain't much of a reputation system if it doesn't reflect a user's reputation.

At the same time it's weird/inconsistent that new members can't get a negative reputation whereas old members who have one are stuck with theirs....

Use this opportunity to get lots of rep from controversial or opinion-splitting posts.

"There is no God, and Islam is for losers. Discuss".
---[One week later]---
"Atheists are stupid, Islam is obviously true. Discuss".

If you can't cope with criticism, get the **** out. Everyone who was so bothered needs to grow some ****ing balls.

Honestly, I'd prefer if we brought back the very old system where you could leave a private message explaining WHY you gave someone pos or neg rep and it was up to you if you wanted to leave your name or not. At least then people could be a little constructive with their negs... and it stopped people from just randomly clicking pos/neg rep in a page.

But I agree, this is the worst system you could possibly ask for. You may as well have no rep at all if you're only going to have positive rep.

Do you miss handing out negs for no obvious reason other than getting your daily kick?

Except, some people would use the system to abuse others by leaving rude messages with their rep.

Then people could report them and the offenders get warnings/bans etc

What? You mean TSR should start to resemble real life a little more, where criticism and praise are received?

Nah. We'll just wrap the members in cotton wool.

It's seemed to make folk speak their minds a little more for not having negs.
Although, it was useful... you automatically knew when someone had stacks of red gems they were either an idiot or a nut job from the religion forums and could just skip reading their posts.
On that basis I vote "yes".
