Do you know how to rearrange? Try and get all the x terms on one side, from there it should be pretty simple.

All the X terms on one side. All the other numbers on the other side.

Go from there.

so when rearranging would I just put the x from one side on the 5 or would I swap the 5 with the 4 so for eg

5x - 5x = 4 + 12

or

5x - 4x = 5 + 12

The one in bold is correct.

Well 5+12=17 5 + 12 = 17 so that means x=17 x = 17 .

ok brilliant thanks for your help i'll try another practice one now

7z - 12 = 6z + 25

so i'd do 7z - 6z = 12 + 25

1z = 37
