Dillemma (Actuarial Sc. or International Management?)

Hi there,

I've got an offer from University of Kent for Bsc Actuarial Science and an offer from University of Warwick for Bsc International Management. Still waiting for reply from City (Actuarial sc) and Uni of Bath (Int. Management)

I am slightly leaning towards doing actuarial science at uni because I will gain a hard skill which will set me up nicely for future employment. However, if I don't get an offer from City, should I go to Kent (not one of the top unis). Do choice of university really matter when doing actuarial?

The prospect of doing International management at Warwick or Bath is also very tempting as I get a valuable experience of working abroad in my 3rd year and those unis are two of the best in the UK....

(My favourite subjects are maths and business and I have predicted grades of A*A*A)

Hi there!

I'm a second year student of International Management and Spanish at the University of Bath and I personally am loving it.

If it's graduate employment you're worried about, Bath is ranked first for graduate prospects, and the year in industry provided at Bath is very attractive to employers. Bath has very strong links with industry and you'd have the chance to spend a year working in a company, gaining priceless working knowledge of the business world.

I have been very impressed with the management side of my course, it offers such a range of interesting modules from accounting to marketing that it doesn't get dull (at least for me!). There are also finance and business analytics as modules so there is still a maths element to the degree.

If you have any other questions at all either about the degree or about life at the University of Bath in general, please do not hesitate to quote me!

Good luck with your decision,
Ellen

City > than Kent : you mean WRT the actuarial science course? Cos it's the other way round according to the league tables (Kent's a top 20 and City, somewhere around 40,if I remember correctly)...

I am more of a finance person I guess. Maths has always been my favourite and I really want to take full advantage of it. My point is that after doing actuarial science, I can always go back to business.

However, as you say I can pick my modules in the International management degree and Bath being most probably the best university for management studies, I don't have to worry too much about employment either!

The fact that I am choosing between these universities is a good problem to have!

Thanks for the reply!!

There aren't any league tables for actuarial science (not one I can think of). However, Im sure City is in the top 15 universities while Kent is a bit lower down....

There are NO league tables for AS. I meant the league tables for universities in general (like the QS, Sunday times etc etc)...

And there are only 9 universities offering specialized AS courses. So there is no question of a 'top 15'...(:

I meant top 15 in the general league table. As you say there are only 9 universities offering specialised AS courses, does it really matter where you do it from then?

Not really...in my opinion, it's the exams that you pass that matter the most. However, it's likely that employers will prefer a graduate from a more prestigious uni than one from a uni that isn't as well known as the other...
