Joining the Raf with a Biomedical Science degree

Hello

Am thinking of joining the RAF at the end of my degree. Am currently in my second year and before I started uni I served in the army for 4 years. I was wondering how the process works if ones already got a degree as the website has only got info on studying with the RAF. I'd like to know how long the initial training takes and what is the process like for someone who's already got a degree. By the way I do not want to join as an officer.

Exactly the same length of time and exactly the same process as anyone who does not have a degree.

On the website it says how they sponsor you to go to uni and you get the degree through them but since I have done that already on my own. I want to know what the next step is. The website only has information for people who want to join as Biomedical Scientists but don't have the qualification

I'm don't work in recruiting, nor am I a bio medical scientist and I am certainly not an intelligence analyst, but reading between the lines…

Your career will start with a 10 week Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle.

The following part may be N/A.

For the next three years you’ll study for a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science at a nearby university dependant on your training location. This will be a day-release course and, in the meantime, you will work in a laboratory that has been approved for training. During this time you will produce a portfolio reflecting your experience. This is used, in conjunction with your degree, to enable state registration with the Health Professions Council.

Meaning you may skip to this part of training.

This is followed by a 16-week phase 2B trade training course, (Transition to Military Practice course) at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham. This course is designed to give you an introduction to the theory and applications of military biomedical science and the various analysers you will be expected to use on deployments.
If you join as a qualified entrant, you’ll undertake recruit training in the rank of AC and then are promoted to the rank of Senior Aircraftman/woman. On first day of productive service you are promoted to Corporal.

From the RAF Careers website.
Hi, the post have already mentioned most of the details joining the RAF as a BMS. However, a few pointers for you:

To to be a qualified entrant, you'll need to to gain the Certificate of Competence via the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and be HCPC registered. Therefore you must ensure that the degree you are undertaking is approved by the IBMS. Check on their website for your course.

If you do not have HCPC registration, you would enter as unqualified entrant.

Basic training is the same which is followed by a military BMS conversion course - this allows the RAF to teach you multi-disciplinary skills which are essential in haematology, microbiology, chemistry and transfusion.

Speak to the AFCO - they will be able to advise you on what the best course of action would be for you to apply.

If you can, get a visit in to find out what the trade is like in the UK and overseas.

Good luck
Hi- just graduating from BMS, did you end up doing this? Would love to do the same..
