About reputation: Edinburgh = Oxbridge?

In China, even East Asia, Edinburgh Univ. has a incredibly high reputation, absolutely higher than it has in the UK. Some chinese say that in the UK Edinburgh is regarded as excellent and prestigious as Oxbridge. Some even call these 3 unis 'the best unis of the UK'. But having read many unis and subject rankings as well as a lot threads on this borad, I find that Edinburgh is not as outstanding as thay say. Perhaps Edinbrugh is good uni., but it seems far behind some top-unis. like LSE, IC, UCL, Bristol, even St Andrews (which has won Edin. in diversed rankin' for a couple years). I am wondering if Edinburgh is so prestigious and top in the UK as some Chinese claim and If it is regarded as the uni. which can compete with Oxbridge and other top-unis mentioned above.

Hello John,

Edinburgh is a very good university yes.
From what I've heard, the universities with the best reputation in the UK in general are Oxford, Cambridge, Dundee, and then Kings/Imperial/University College London.

However, the best university for you depends greatly on what course you wish to do!
You will find rankings for individual subjects here: -

and here: -

which will give you a vague idea of how well a particular uni is doing at the moment.

It is also worth taking into consideration the environment you will be working in. It's no good being in the best university when you're not inspired to work.

dundee?!!!! PAH yeah alright then!!!!!!
Hello,

Lol, yeah most people say that because it is somewhere up yonder!! I was shocked myself when multiple academics. I am researching doing PhD's at the moment, and I was told that if the Russell group gets halved (which is likely within the next 10 years), then Dundee would be in it.

Cheers,

Roz.

Edinburgh has an very good reputation, particularly internationally. They really know this and work hard on it: the prospectus is filled with references to the fact that there's an Edinburgh alumnus from just about every country on Earth and it's about 15% international students, which is a fair bit higher than most universities, and it means you're not going to be feeling like an outsider. It's a good, solid university and in some areas (particularly computer-related stuff) it's one of the very best in the world. It's also one of the loveliest cities in the world, and well worth spending four years at.

Hmmmm, well, I'm just going by what I've been told!!
Maybe its just for Biochemistry...
Reseach at Dundee is 5* for Molecular Biosciences, so maybe that's where they got it from.

The thing is, if you are from outside Britain, a degree from Edinburgh will stand you in very good stead, not least because just about everyone knows where it is and has heard of it. I doubt you could say the same about a degree from somewhere like Reading.

biochem, cellular and molecular biology, and medicine are all excellent.
its research into cancer and diabetes is truly world-class. everyone in the UK knocks dundee but scientists around the world really respect it. it's life science research puts in on a par with oxford and cambridge. it attracts a lot of research funding, esp wellcome trust. a lot of wellcome trust groups moved to dundee from cambridge - so there you go.

School of Life Sciences at Dundee named the 3rd best place in the world to work in outside the USA

In a poll conducted by The Scientist, the University of Dundee was voted the 3rd most desirable place in the world for a scientist to work in, after Dalhousie University, Canada and INRA Research Center at Versailles-Grignon, France.

The Scientist posted a web-based questionnaire and invited scientists in tenure and tenure-track positions to respond. The results were based on responses from 2,210 scientists in the USA, Canada and western Europe.

Hello, John

I got a lot of Chinese friends when I was at LSE. They never told me that they would regard Edinburgh on the same level with Oxbridge, LSE, IC. Don't believe that Dundee has a good reputation in China. It does not even have a really good reputation in this country.

I am now at Cambridge doing a PHD. According to my fellow students including some Chinese: in regard of reputation: Oxbridge >LSE>IC>UCL>......

Good luck.
