International Study help?!?

So, I'm currently in my second year of college and am hoping to go to an American Uni, I've just started in the revision for my SAT's and my targets from my tutor are 760/800 for my reading, 750/800 for my maths and 720/800 for my writing. I know these are fairly good but I was wondering first how I could improve my Writing score. Then also I wanted to apply for decent schools and some say that I need to sit SAT subject tests but my favourite school doesn't have it as a requirement, should I still take it? I've read in places that the conversion of English to American Grades are always really poor and leave you with a bad GPA so it's best not to calculate them and leave it blank for the University to decide; is this the case? What things are really important for international students to have when applying to university in the States? When should I be applying for Uni? Finally for UK students in the US, what is it like? What's hard?, what's good? etc. Thank you in advance. Jordan
