The BTECs work like this -

BTEC National Award - 1 A level (P, M, D)
BTEC National Certificate - 2 A levels (PP, MP, MM, DM, DD)
BTEC National Diploma 3 - A levels (PPP, MPP, MMP, MMM, DMM, DDM, DDD)

So basically, a DDD at Diploma is worth AAA in A levels, where as PPP would be worth EEE in A levels. Etc.

So if you've taken an Award & a Certificate in two courses then you've gained the equivalent of 3 A levels.

Although some colleges make you take an Award for the first year, then if you wish to progress onto the second year they transfer it to a Certificate, earning you 2 A levels. The first year wouldn't count as another A level though. Basically, if you've taken a total of 18 units on your courses it totals 3 A levels, 12 for 2 A levels and 6 for 1.
