What happened to Modern day Architecture (in Britain and around the world)?

What happened to the cultured Gothic/Jacobean influences (Westminster abbey) to the beautiful Regency such as the White House, to dwellings in Plimco/Cheltenham. I like the Pediment entablature and columns all the way to the cornices around the upper part of the houses. Also Palladian too!

The Elizabethan (which I suppose are influenced by the French renaissance architecture, succeeded by Jacobean) building like Longleat are quite pleasant too. Also the highly detailed Spanish Plateresque to French Renaissance architecture in their Chateaus and the interestingly divine Russian counterparts Naryshkin Baroque architecture i.e Winter Palace.

These days its all GLASS!

A lot of it is about economics - modern materials are cheaper and easier to work with.

Also, architects design buildings and structures now using those materials that were impossible in previous times.

We've had several architects in doing new builds. Not a single one of them has square rooms. It's an IT nightmare.

That modern architecture, while it looks stunning; is a logistical nightmare.

You just tend to end up with more wasted space. We did an IT suite earlier this year which was shaped bizarrely. Ended up with corners of just wasted space, or pay a fortune for specialised desks. Older buildings are just square. Much easier to kit out. However, in terms of servicing etc the new builds are much better. The access ways and ceiling ducts etc are all much more accessible. In some old builds you need to be either a midget or have a 20" waist to get in some of the service ducts.

I kid you not. I don't know who or what kind of people they were built for.
