Is doing a media degree worth it?

You don’t need art A level to apply for creative degrees - just a portfolio of work.

Digital media isn’t going to help you much in building a GD career. If you don’t have a portfolio good enough to get into a GD degree then it would be a better plan to take an Art Foundation Diploma for a year to build your portfolio and reapply for degrees using that.

What will digital media help me with?

It's basically a much narrower course focusing on some aspects web/mobile based design (but more focusing on the coding to implement other people's designs) - if you want a very narrow job implementing designs produced by graphic designers then it might be worthwhile pursuing. If you're sure you want to specialise as a web developer (not a designer) then it's not a terrible idea - the problem is that any course like this that doesn't require a portfolio is going to be a very weak substitute for a graphic design degree if you actually want to be designing.

I'm currently deciding on what to do...any advice? Since this is 6 years old

Covid-19 is likely going to wreck media for a while. I guess if you started today.... Three years we might be fine.

Broad media degrees are generally not a good option for most people. A specialist film or tv production degree (with an emphasis on practical experience) is a better option if you want to build your portfolio of skills and work on industry standard equipment.
Media courses tend to be too broad and without sufficient time spent building practical experience - they’re more likely to prepare you for a marketing job than a role in production.

Jobs in industry are based on your showreel and proven track record - building that without a degree is possible and building it alongside a less practical degree is possible but both are more difficult than building it on a highly practical course.
CILECT members are the top choices for practical, industry standard courses but they’re very competitive.

You should probably have a really good look online at what all the universities are offering as there are so many different types of "media" degrees out there. Some unis have very practical courses where others have a mix of academic and practical. You need to look at the course modules as that will give you the best idea. Don't let people put you off about media courses being a waste of time. I think the fact that UCL is starting a media course in 2021 says something! When you search online look for things in the course title like MEDIA, FILM, COMMUNICATIONS, CULTURE, JOURNALISM. Film Studies is more like English Lit but with film by the way.

I'm not sure where to begin. I want to get into film maybe comedy if I can or any other type of film I'm not to picky. however I'm not sure exactly how this would happen or how likely my chances are....as you know there is a lot of noise around media but I love film for example me and a friend made a comedy and we got a distinction for it in college. Where do I go from after college in the UK (non a levels) to get into film. Thank you.

If you want to get into film then your best option is to study film production/film making (a practical degree) at a CILECT member (the international accreditation body) film school.

Did you start your degree in media and communication? I'm thinking about starting the same course at Brunel University London. How do you find it?
