I'm studying The Great Gatsby at AS, but my teacher has had a lot of time off ill. The first thing she did when she came back was set us an essay 'How does present the idea of the past in The Great Gatsby', and I'm completely stuck. If anyone knows any good websites or resources I would appreciate it!

I would suggest looking at the comparisons to old money (e.g. Tom, etc versus new money (gatsby, etc). Possibly more important is the american dream of the past (looked at as a spiritual one and its symbols and motifs such as the lights, etc) & the new american dream (a more materialistic one, about money, etc). There is really a lot you could do with this topic.

I hope this helps.
