American student thinking of studying in the UK

Hello! My name is Jennie, I'm a 20 year old American citizen.
i have a few questions about applying and becoming a student in the UK.

i am interested in going into the medical field, specifically obstetrics/gynecology.
Im currently a certified nurses assistant working with Alzheimer's and dementia patients. I enjoy taking care of people, but I'm not sure geriatrics is where I want to be my whole life!

How would I go about applying to a university in the UK?
what are the requirements for me to be accepted into a program like this?

Do universities in the UK even accept international students in medical courses?

if you have any info please let me know!

You certainly can study medicine/medical related degrees here

I believe international students also apply through the UCAS system, although you might be able to apply directly to the universities too.

Yep, international students can certainly study medicine in the UK. For example the University of Leicester has historically admitted about 20 overseas students a year into their medical school. Obviously there are other institutions, it's just that I am most familiar with UoL.

FWIW here's the link to Leicester's medical school. Note that this is an extremely competitive course, and Leicester (and others) will be pretty selective.

Thank you!!!
I hoped to live around the Guildford area, so a university around there would be good!
what are the GCSEs? I've seen requirements for them, would I have to take a test before I apply?
also, what can I do to have a higher chance of being accepted?

How soon before a start of a program should I apply?
After completing a your degree, are you given the option to work in the UK?

sorry for all the questions!

Guildford is a fairly specific location, and I don't know how mobile you are, but it rather falls in between a number of medical schools. You have the major ones in London (University College London, Imperial College London, Queen Mary etc.) plus the likes of Oxford and Southampton, but none are what you would call local to Guildford. Flexibility and/or an ability to commute (and patience!) would be necessary.

Medicine isn't my speciality, nor is London and the South East, so it might be worth posting on the above named university sections on the forum to get a feel for some of the other questions that you have. The specific university websites will give you the basic info on entrance requirements.

Good luck!
