Fractured my wrist

Hi I fell off my bike today and fractured my wrist, broke in two places. Obviously depends on size of break and whatever but does anyone know roughly how long it will take to heal or how long it will be before cast comes off?

Gotta go back to hospital on Monday for more x-rays and a more extensive check-up so I'll know for definite then.

Anyone got any rough estimates? Going on holiday in just over 3 weeks :frown:

Cheers

Awwww, you poor thing! I broke my wrist when I was about 7, and it hasn't been the same since :frown:

You won't be cast-free for your holiday, but I went to a theme park with mine on so it shouldn't restrict you too much.

If they give you any instructions about what to do, then make sure you do it!

Thanks for that

I'd say between 6 and 10 weeks, depending on the severity of the fracture. Just try and avoid getting sand in the cast and you'll be fine. Bring a marker pen.

A handy tip I picked up from somewhere....

When you shower, you have to keep the cast dry... If you can, find a vet who deals with large animals and nick some of their gloves they use to errrr, go up a cows/horses backside.....

I'm dead serious by the way, they're better than carrier bags.

thanks for the replies so far, even if they r depressing.

another quick question:

will it be easier to pull women on holiday by using the sympathy card? i'd like to think so:wink:

omg i fell of my motorbike on wednesday and have a suspected wrist (scaphoid bone) fracture. I went casualty and had x rays but they could see no fracture which is apparantly quite common for that bone. I had all the symptons though so they have to treat it like its broken for 2 weeks when xrays will def show if healing or never broken. Ive looked round the internet and apparantly will take 10-16 weeks to heal if broken. That really sucks though as will have to start uni with a broken wrist and i cant get a job so may have to starve at uni (or be extremeley poor lol). Really hoping its not broken and this splint thing im wearing is ssoooo uncomfortable. Glad the pain is way less but please please dont be broken. OP hope yours heals soon.

yeah some places ive read 10-16 but most say 6-10. i think it depends what part of the wrist u break. whatever it's pretty sh*t! im not looking forward to this summer now cause

a) i cant do much
b) im gonna be fat and lose all my muscle now (not that i had that much )

anyone got any ideas how to do arm exercises with a broken wrist?

Um... Go jogging? Lifting weights isn't the only way of keeping healthy.

I snapped all the tendons in my knee so i couldn't do any sport or even walk without crutches and a plastered knee/wheelchair for 10 months! Stop making such a big deal out of a broken wrist!

During this time, i worked on my GCSEs and did a P/T job, a broken wrist will not stop you from getting a job!

I know for a fact that you can do quite a bit with a broken wrist (first game back after my knee had healed and i broke my wrist, doh!) and it takes about 7 weeks to heal if you are fit and do alot of sport. A broken wrist is an inconvienience, it should not stop you from working or doing anything!

My arm has been in a cast for about 6 or more weeks now, but it comes of really soon
It doesnt really stop you doing too much just makes everything more difficult. So I am sure you will still be able to enjoy your holiday.

Really? Do you no anyone who would activley employ someone who has a broken wrist? Especially as i have no use of my right hand so cannot write and can type only very slowly. I now i can do alot of stuff and i really want a job maybe it would be diferent if i allready had a job and an understanding employer, but i was trying to get a job before i broke my wrist with no luck. Im very glad you managed to do all that with a broken wrist, but it is not the same for everyone. Im just hoping when i go back for more xrays they find its not broken. And it has stopped me from doing two of the best things in my life playing my trumpet and ride my motorbike.

I work in orthopaedics...

If you are 11/12 yrs old or less it'll be on for 3 weeks

If you're 13+ then you're looking at 5 weeks for a wrist in most cases

hope you're dealing with the cast ok!

Hey OP, don't worry about what'll happen to your wrist afterwards, I broke mine over a year ago, for a while after I thought it would never go back to normal but now it's basically fine. It no longer twinges when I move it, so don't be worried if for a while afterwards if it doesn't feel quite right..

I had to take the 6 weeks off my part time work when I had a broken wrist, it is harder for some people, so some posters on here shouldn't be so quick to judge! Saying that though, had the riding school let me, I would have quite happily carried on horse riding at the time so it is amazing some of the things you can do (I actually broke it out riding, and had to ride back for three hours with a cack arm!)

And I think you will get a lot of sympathy from girls when ur on holiday- it will definatly give you sumthing to talk about anyway!

If they refuse you work because you're in a cast, surely that's disability discrimination?
