As I have just been awarded head boy 2 days ago I think I might be able to help. The best thing to do is be enthusiastic, thats exactly what they want. Make sure you let them know your looking for extra responsibility and are capable of taking it on because you have [list some relevant qualities you have]

In my interview they created some mock scenarios and asked me how I would deal with them. I put a big emphasis on the fact that I would not delegate any task that I wouldnt be prepared to do myself and so if it came down to it I could step in if there was a problem or somebody was absent.

You will more than likely have to give presentations or short speeches in the position so make sure you come accross as a good speaker and tell them you are confident.

Good Luck!

wow didnt really expect such quick feedback but thanx *princess* and tomdav your comments really helped!! So im hoping as long as i dont get too nervous and say what my teachers want to hear i should be ok ..:p:
..i was head girl about 2 years ago, we had to go through a speech + a vote (by classmates +_ staff!!!!)....what i did was talk about how i would help improve the school, and then talk about what i had achieved so far and how it would help.// Another pointer could be that i talk about how this role would help you and also talk about how you are qualified for the role like: being in MUN you are good at public speaking.

Well seeing as its tomorrow its lucky we got back quickly  Oooh also say you want to develop the role for future students, by looking for better ways to operate and things. Best of luck tomorrow!

Be optimistic and act as if you really want this position.. Practice mock interviews with a friend or a teacher. Talk about your weaknesses and what you personal qualities are etc.. Most importantly though -be honest

i was head girl at my school (just left having finished my A-levels) and recently had to help interview for new ones..

we were looking for people with good, practical ideas about how to improve the school and the 6th form in general; people who had the respect of their peers and the staff and those who could clearly show an enthusiasm for the role and the drive to get things done.

good luck!
A word of warning!
Having been offered the position of deputy head student for the past year, im telling you if u dont get head girl don't take the deputy post!!!
It is horrid!!!!! The head students deligate the horrid jobs like sorting the seating arrangements for the leavers ball, with like 24 hours to go... alongside coursework deadlines. Then everyone hates you!!! I left sixth form on preety bad terms with some ppl! So be preapred to be a tough cookie!!! and demostrate this in the interview!!!!!!

not always the case...my deputies did sweet F.A

in fact..so did the head boy:rolleyes:

prepare yourself for lots of work, but it's worth the effort - i loved being head girl, and even if you don't enjoy it, the title looks great on UCAS!
How does the head boy/girl system work, I am changing schools next year for sixth form and the school i will be going to has a head boy and girl. What advantages does it give? Is there only one head boy and one head girl for the whole school? Sorry in answer to your original question maybe get involved in public speaking and that will improve your confidence and make you appear better when presenting. There are also lots of websites to help: http://www.speechtips.com/.
no probs tn 88  .. Good luck and tell us what happens!!!!.

For me, the head giril thing is a bit of a plus point coz it helps with uni apps. Coz that shows a position of responsibility as well as other qualities.
Another thing, this role helped me a lot with self confidence, coz i had to make more speeches, in front of an audience of 300!! (yip there were more tn 88!), it even helps if you wanted to try out for mUN and stuff, coz its a real confidence builder in every way, like being able to walk into a room of strangers and make friends. These pointers are especially helpful when you go to uni.
yip there is only one head girl and head boy + their deputies.

I can only echo what others have said.
I would also recommend something that may sound daft to a lot of people, but it does help (imo): really think about what you're going to wear to an interview if you're in a school that allows you to wear your own clothes. I'm usually quite a smart dresser - I preferred to wear pretty skirts and court shoes to wearing jeans all the time, and tbh I think that dressing as I usually did on the day of my head girl interview was a huge disadvantage. Obviously it's not the only thing they take into account but how you dress is a huge reflection on your personality, and if maybe I'd thought to dress as a 'normal' sixth former (eg. jeans and a jumper or something like that) they might have viewed me as being more normal and more able to fit in with my peer group. There were five of us that went for two head-girl positions. Two were nice enough but didn't really do anything for the school or get particularly good grades. Then there was a girl who I shall call girl A, who had been in loads of concerts and school plays, was really nice and quite clever. Then there was girl B, who was confident and popular but a real bitch with it and not that clever (although in her defence she was quite involved in sports at the school). Then there was me who, like girl A, had been in loads of concerts and school plays, helped with PTA events, had wanted to be head girl for as long as I could remember, got good grades and didn't get into trouble. Many people said that they expected the two posts to go to me and girl A, and they didn't - they went to girl A and girl B. When girl B came out of the office and said excitedly that she was head girl I honestly thought she was joking, and it upset me hugely not to have got it myself. I continued to think that when I got A grades and girl B got D grades at A level.
All the others went into their interviews in 'normal' sixth-form attire. I didn't, and in retrospect it seems like it would have been a good idea, because I can't think what else would have prevented me from being awarded the post. I truly believe that what you wear and how what you wear makes you appear makes a huge difference to the way people perceive you, so do think about it (eg. if your dressing style is a bit conservative or off the wall then maybe think about changing it for just a day)! Sorry if any of this sounded arrogant and/or like a rant! xx

varies from school to school.
at my place there's 1 head girl, 1 head boy and 2 deputies of each sex.

i was responsible for the prefects and organising their rota..making sure the common room was looked after and organising the yearbook and leavers' dinner...fund raising..making speeches at school open evenings..attending govenors' meetings..interviewing for new staff..interviewing for renewal of cleaning and catering contracts

the list goes on and on.

but then i know a head girl from another local school who hasnt had to do anything!

well ive had the interview...and imo i think it really went well but now all i can do is wait because they will be telling us the outcome on wednesday...i think i answered the questions really well and was very confident...despite my head of year tryin to make me laugh
Glamour Girl and Calculus Man thanx for what you said had you not posted i would not have thought about my strengths or weaknesses and one of my questions was to talk about my strengths and weaknesses and the benefits of my strengths. I said im confidant, good speaker, responsible, well organised you know the usual :p:

after the interview i went and spoke 2 my head of year who said he and the head of sixth form and head teacher were really impressed but couldnt say no more..i just hope that means i got the role as HEAD GIRL lol yay! (ill try not to get my hopes too high tho)

Thanx for your posts, calcium 878 - thnx for the gd luck  , Louise_1988 i knew the previous head girl and boy and they did let me know that the interview would involve talking about changes that i would consider making, sluggabed - i tried my best to ensure the qualities mentioned outshone n hopefully they did!, jaffacakes - sorry to hear that but @ our school the previous deputy head girl said they worked as a team n there wasnt delegation from the head girl so hopefully it wont be the same @ my school!, wackysparkle (again!) - i'm hoping that my confidance does increase because though im able to talk in public i do find it hard and this will be a good challenge for me  , Angelil - i was very smart and though we have a smart dress code and no one really follows it but they have become more relaxed i decided to be smart as our school is very big on SMART DRESS so i did wear smart and presentable clothing which i forgot to mention all three teachers commented positively on!so thanx i too believe your clothing does reflect a lot about the way you present yourself!

Thank you to everyone who posted and hopefully this post will become useful to others who will havbe their head girl/boy interviews!

Meeeh, I wish my school had head girls and such like. We just get an elected commitee of about 6 (supposed to be 20 but hardly anybody turns up) with no leader that involves us talking about how clean the toilets were this week and organising dull events because somebody smashed up the pool table and we have to foot the bill!

Very typical comprehensive 'couldn't possibly infer that somebody could be better than another student...at anything'. :p:
