what exactly is academic commentary? could I just mention what was said in the judgements of cases when writing an essay in the exam
and if it's not what was said in the judgments then where do I find academic commentary?

Unsurprisingly, you find academic commentary in articles and books written by academics. Case judgments are not academic commentary.
