Why is Britain such a backward country?

Just because you don't like the way the country is run, it does not mean that the UK is fundamentally messed up. Leave if you want to, but it's quite presumptuous of you to claim that this is a backwards country just because you don't like it.

Because not all of us are that lazy that our lives come to a standstill for a whole day each week.
Well, I'm sorry that some of us appreciate a break and don't want to work ourselves to death. Don't be so selfish.

But who said anything about working constantly?

But people that work Sundays get a day off in the week? There are loads of reasons someone might want a different day off - different holy day, prefers a week day off, more pay etc. And it works for the rest of us who want to do stuff on a Sunday!

Yep. I wasn't suggesting that ppl work 7 days a week. Just that shifts are arranged so that Sunday isn't so dead. For people who are committed Mon to Sat, it can be annoying. Especially if you want to spend time with your family but venues are closed.

But it's traditional that Sunday is the rest day :cry2:

I'm a traditionalist.

Exactly. Plus, some people prefer weekdays off. As I don't have kids at the moment, I'd love to work a Sunday and get a day off in the week. Cheaper cinema tickets, less crowds, easier for deliveries etc

Loads of things are traditional that aren't right

Plus not everyone is Christian which is where that comes from. If you're Jewish, Saturday is the rest day

You have your Orange Wednesdays and I think it's eligible for midweek reduced grocery delivery.

So? Not everyone who lives here now is Christian, society should realise that

If you compare Britain with Germany, the Scandanavian countries, the Netherlands and perhaps Belgium, France and Austria, then maybe socially and emotionally we are backwards. This could be evidenced by the level and nature of drunkenness, economic inequality, attitudes to sex, lack of style in the way we dress, inability to manage sensibly in patterns of weather that only occur for a few days a year, and the proportion of people who feel unhappy about their appearance. I blame the legacy of Oliver Cromwell, Queen Victoria and to a lesser extent the period of the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

Though if you compare our standard of living, the proportion of people who have enough to eat, level of education, arts and culture with probably all bar twenty countries in the whole world, we are in a much better position. If we were that bad, why do so many people from other countries in the EU and Commonwealth come and live here? The way I view it, if you are born in the UK, if where you are born is a lottery, being born here is akin to getting five numbers and the bonus ball.

I'm a British citizen (as has been my entire family for generations), and I can't wait to leave. Yeah, you did read that. I can't wait to leave and go to somewhere that may even slightly represent human progress. This country is still living in Victorian times. The obsession with the monarchy, the pathetic 'moralistic' inclinations of Middle Englanders (i.e. bigotry, backwardness, and intolerance), the pervasive obsession with WWII and Empire, Cameron's porn filters, the absurd drug laws, the fact that pubs are essentially forced to close before midnight (compare to the rest of Europe), the fact that the London Underground closes at midnight, the democratic deficit in government, the fact that the world seems to come to a standstill just because it's a Sunday (wah, tradition!). Ultimately, I refuse to allow my extortionate taxes to be spent on maintaining this ridiculous state of affairs. Sadly, I'm being forced to want to leave the country of my birth because of it. Why is Britain such a backward country?
Oh I'm sure Britain is 100 times better than were your from even the politics/government of it....
Mind if I ask where are you from?

This makes me realize how lucky I am to be born in Canada.
Studying here has made me notice the quality of life difference a fair bit.

the UK, culturally, is pitiful and toothless - we don't have any appreciation for freedom and our culture is a mixture between stale victorianism and political aristocracy and I'd actually emigrate if I could but my university degree isn't very transferable to places around the world like america. the only thing about britain that makes us respectable is our citizens that have gone on to do amazing things (not the queen, god no, I'm talking about people like newton, adam smith, JS mill, turing, russell, hume, hawking, etc) but our country itself is a political hopeless wilderness where nobody is listened to and only heat-magazine/sun newspaper readers matter in elections seeing as they are usually the "great stupid majority", to misquote nixon. we've got a "parental-lock democracy" where we are only allowed a meaningless vote every half decade which decides virtually nothing at all. we are constantly given promises that are never lived up to and year after year more and more things are banned or tried to become banned - ed miliband has been trying to get cigarette packaging, loan adverts and slot machines banned, and david cameron has been trying to ban porn - let that message ring out loadly to all those who think we're not a authoritarian state. slippery slimy authoritarians make up our culture of snobbish nannyism and middle class hipster champaign socialism. I can't wait until our country is politically ruined so I can say "I hate to say I told you so" from the far reaches of another country.
